East Riding of Yorkshire Day

Members of the East Riding of Yorkshire Society held the inaugural East Riding of Yorkshire Day this week in Pocklington, having agreed that 24th August should be celebrated as East Riding of Yorkshire Day.

The date was chosen in celebration of the East Riding of Yorkshire’s greatest son,  William Wilberforce who was born on that day in 1759. Wilberforce was closely associated with the East Riding of Yorkshire having being born in Hull, baptised in Seaton Ross and having attended Pocklington School.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Declaration was read by Hilary Slights who also represented the North Riding of Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Ridings Society.
