From Shetland to Pembrokeshire and from Cornwall to Lincolnshire many counties who have a county flag celebrate their cultural heritage by holding a county day.
While selecting the finalists for the County Durham flag competition the judges decided that as County Durham is on the verge of establishing its own county flag it should also have a county day to celebrate the cultural heritage of County Durham.
The following days were selected for the public to vote for their preferred date:
- 20 March – St Cuthbert’s birthday
- 27 September – Opening of the world’s first purpose-built passenger railway between Stockton and Darlington
- 17 October – Battle of Neville’s Cross
- 31 October – Jarrow March arrived in London
The County Durham Day Vote will commence today and close on Sunday 22 September. The most popular date will be announced on Monday 23 September at the same time as the finalists for the County Durham Flag Competition.
